Turmoil
2016/2017

Turmoil Exhibition
Osaka University of Arts
May 11-21, 2017
In taking Turmoil as a theme, how can we, think of its various aspects, both personal and social, positive and negative? How does one enter into a state of turmoil? How does one navigate through such a period? What can one learn and how does one re-emerge?
In the medium of photography the world normally looks still. But the world keeps turning and turmoil seems a natural phenomenon. One can conclude that turmoil is equal to creation. On a global scale, we have been living in the happiest period of humankind yet we face extreme challenges on many fronts: social inequalities, sectarian warfare, environmental degradation, discrimination and poverty, to name a few. No country is immune. Global terrorism, Brexit, and neo-isolationism reflect how the world has been thrown into chaos.
As artists we can hope to instigate awareness, reflection and dialogue through creative forms, addressing both the personal and the socio-political. In INTAC there is the opportunity to share experiences and perspectives across our cultures, examining the many faces of Turmoil in our world. How will the massive shifts we are facing transform us and what changes will they bring about?
